Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the 11th chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), replacing Madhabi Puri Buch. Ms Buch’s three-year term as the SEBI chief will end on March 1, 2025.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Mr Pandey’s appointment for a term of three years. He is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Odisha cadre and is currently serving as the finance secretary and secretary of the Department of Revenue.
Mr Pandey took over as finance Secretary in September 2024 after the position became vacant due to T V Somanathan’s promotion to Cabinet Secretary. Before this, he had held key positions in the government, including: secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management and secretary of the Department of Public Enterprises.
In these roles, Mr Pandey played a major part in India’s economic policies, disinvestment programmes and public sector management. His experience in handling government finances and investments makes him a strong choice for leading the SEBI.
Mr Pandey has been involved in some of the most important financial decisions in recent years, including the vital role in drafting a new Income Tax Bill and privatisation of Air India other public sector companies, among others.
Mr Pandey holds a master’s degree in economics from Panjab University and an MBA from University of Birmingham, the UK.
