Income Tax Department detects Rs 30,444.17 crore in undisclosed income in FY25

Income Tax Department has detected Rs 30,444.17 crore in undisclosed income during 465 survey operations in the financial year 2024-25, according to a written reply by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in the Rajya Sabha.
The department conducts surveys, search and seizure operations and assessments to act on credible information about direct tax evasion and bring unaccounted income under the tax net.
The survey count fell from 1,245 in FY23 to 737 in FY24, but the higher detection in FY25 highlights a sharper focus on high-value cases. In FY24, undisclosed income of Rs 3,722.23 crore was identified, while FY23 saw Rs 9,805.04 crore detected.
FY25 also recorded 1,437 search operations across groups, leading to asset seizures worth Rs 2,503.73 crore. In comparison, 1,166 group searches in FY24 had seized Rs 2,555.05 crore and 741 searches in FY23 had led to Rs 1,765.56 crore in seizures.
In another reply, Mr Chaudhary has said that total tax arrears, including direct and indirect taxes, stood at Rs 54.53 lakh crore. Of this, Rs 47,52,088.73 crore pertained to direct taxes and Rs 7,01,582.73 crore to indirect taxes. Within indirect taxes, Rs 2,66,612.32 crore related to cases with arrears exceeding Rs 10 crore and Rs 3,71,318.11 crore is pending due to litigation.
