Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Z-Morh tunnel, a vital, all-weather tunnel, in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Monday.
Speaking after opening the crucial tunnel, Mr Modi said: “Jammu and Kashmir is the crown of the country. I want this crown to be beautiful and prosperous.”
The prime minister also paid tributes to seven people, including labourers, who were killed in a terror attack in the area in October 2024.
The Z-Morh tunnel, located on the strategic Srinagar-Leh national highway, cost Rs 2,400 crore and spans 6.5 km. It will significantly improve connectivity to the Ladakh region all through the year.
The construction of the tunnel began in May 2015 and concluded in 2024. The tunnel had its “soft opening” in February 2024.
The tunnel is a strategically-significant infrastructure project located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Overseen by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation, the Z-Morh tunnel has been referred to as an “engineering marvel”.
The name “Z-Morh” derives from the Z-shaped roadway that existed before the construction of the tunnel, which was situated at an elevation of over 8,500 feet and was susceptible to snow avalanches during winter. This led to closure of access to Sonamarg throughout the cold months.
APCO Infratech has been instrumental in executing the project under the auspices of APCO-Shri Amarnathji Tunnel.
