ChatGPT-maker OpenAI set for India debut with an office in New Delhi

OpenAI, the Sam Altman-led multi-billion-dollar AI startup, is officially establishing its presence in India by opening a new office in New Delhi.
In a press release, the ChatGPT developer said that opening an office in India reflects the company’s support for the country’s IndiaAI Mission and is a sign of its commitment to “build AI for India, with India” in partnership with the government.
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market and one of the fastest-growing, right after the US. Last year, ChatGPT users in India have increased by more than four times and have the largest population of students on ChatGPT worldwide.
In a statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said: “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader – amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India and with India.”
OpenAI has added that it has yet to confirm the location of the office in New Delhi. But the company has already started hiring a local team and established an entity in the country.
