6,600 mw of nuclear power capacity coming up, 7,000 mw under various stages of development

Around 6,600 mw of nuclear power capacity is under construction, and another 7,000 mw is under various stages of planning and approval, Power Minister Manohar Lal has said.
The minister has added that 12,723.50 mw of hydroelectric projects are under construction.
Further, 4,274 mw of hydroelectric projects are under various stages of planning and targeted to be completed by 2031-32, Mr Lal has said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
Nuclear power capacity of 6,600 mw is targeted to be completed by 2029-30.
According to official data, India’s current nuclear capacity is over 8,780 mw. In energy storage systems, 11,620 mw/69,720 mwh pumped-storage projects (PSPs) are under construction.
A total of 6,580 mw/39,480 mwh capacity of PSPs is concurred and yet to be taken up for construction.
Currently, 9,653.94 mw/ 26,729.32 mwh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity is under construction, and 19,797.65 mw/ 61,013.40 mwh of BESS capacity is under tendering stage.
In a separate reply, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik has informed the house that India has added 52,536.49 mw of installed generation capacity in the current financial year, 2025-26 (till January 2026).
As of January 31, 2026, the total installed generation capacity is 5,20,511 mw, of which the share of renewable energy sources is 2,63,189 mw or 50.6 per cent of the total installed capacity.
