The government has hiked Export Duty or windfall tax on diesel from Rs 21.50 to Rs 55.50 per litre and on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from Rs 29.50 to Rs 42 a litre.
Export Duty on petrol continues to remain nil.
The duties have been levied to curb exports of the fuels and increase their domestic availability amid their disruption as a result of the war in West Asia.
They are also aimed at preventing exporters from selling the fuels abroad and gaining from higher overseas prices compared with lower rates in the domestic market.
Private fuel retailers have preferred to sell in overseas markets because dominant public sector fuel retailers have frozen pump prices of automobile fuels in the country despite incurring huge under-recoveries on petrol and diesel.
State-run IOCL, BPCL and HPCL enjoy near monopoly in domestic fuel retailing with about 90 per cent of market-share.
