IndiGo has signed a preliminary agreement with CFM International to buy over 1,000 LEAP-1A engines.

The deal marks a record order for the French-US engine-maker that ‌is emerging from industry-wide congestion over repairs.

Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

The deal also includes plans for IndiGo, India’s largest airline, to open its own maintenance, ⁠repair and overhaul (MRO) centre as well as a parts supply deal, in Bengaluru, echoing a similar move by Ireland’s Ryanair.

IndiGo is building a massive 31-acre MRO centre near the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

Under the LEAP engine deal, CFM will exclusively provide maintenance and repair service for IndiGo and also support it with supply of its spare parts.

CFM, which makes engines for the Boeing 737 MAX and competes with Pratt & Whitney on the Airbus A320neo, is the world’s largest engine-maker by number of units sold.

It is co-owned by GE Aerospace and France’s Safran.

The engine industry has faced disruption for years over long maintenance waiting time and shortage of spare parts, which have forced many airlines to keep planes temporarily idle.
