With Wistron deal, Tata Group becomes first Indian company to make iPhones

The Tata Group has acquired Wistron’s operations in India, paving the way for it to manufacture and assemble Apple iPhones in India for both domestic and global markets. The announcement was made by Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on social media platform X.

He said, “Within just two-and-a-half years, Tata Group will now start making iPhones from India for domestic and global markets from India. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron’s operations.

Along with his statement, he attached a press release issued by Wistron, where it announced that it held a board meeting on Friday and granted approval to its subsidiaries, SMS InfoComm (Singapore) and Wistron Hong Kong, to sign the share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics (TEPL) for sale of its 100 per cent indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India).

“Upon confirmation and signature of the relevant agreements by both parties, the deal will proceed to obtain the necessary approvals. Following the completion of the transaction, Wistron will make the required announcements and filings in accordance with applicable regulations,” the release added.

This announcement makes it official that the Tata Group will become the first Indian firm to manufacture iPhones in India.

Mr Chandrasekhar went on to credit Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “visionary PLI scheme”, stating that it has already propelled India into becoming a “trusted and major hub for smartphone manufacturing and exports”.
