JSW drives into electric commercial vehicle market with Ampstar and Rs 2,500-cr funding

JSW has formally entered the electric commercial vehicle (e-commercial vehicle) market with the launch of Ampstar, a new brand of electric trucks (e-trucks) and electric buses (e-buses).
The e-commercial vehicles have been rolled out by subsidiary JSW Greentech that will manufacture and sell e-buses and heavy-duty e-trucks.
The company has already invested around Rs 2,500 crore in the e-commercial vehicle operation with a large manufacturing base in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra.
The Ampstar vehicles will be manufactured at JSW Greentech’s 90-acre greenfield facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
JSW Greentech, which operates an R&D centre in Pune, says that the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar facility will include integrated battery capabilities.
The company has indicated that another Rs 2,000 crore of investment could potentially double the manufacturing capacity from 15,000 vehicles to around 30,000 units annually subject to demand.
JSW is building the e-mobility business around a combination of large-scale manufacturing, captive demand from its own industrial operations, e-buses, e-trucks, battery integration, charging infrastructure and flexible ownership models, such as leasing and battery-as-a-service (BaaS).
For JSW, the move creates another major pillar in its rapidly expanding mobility business.
For the country’s commercial vehicle industry, it introduces a well-capitalised, new competitor at a time when electrification is beginning to extend beyond last-mile delivery vehicles into buses and heavy trucks.
