Vehicle sales in March plunge by 28.64%, driven by fall in sales of three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers

Total vehicle registrations across categories declined by 28.64 per cent to 16,49,678 units in March 2021 compared with 23,11,687 units in the year-ago period despite a low base last year. The fall in registrations was driven by a plunge in sales of three-wheelers, commercial vehicles and two-wheelers, according to data of the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Associations (FADA).

The automobile dealers’ body has said that three-wheeler sales dropped the most by 50.72 per cent to 38,034 units in March 2021 as against 77,173 units in the year-ago period. Similarly, sales of commercial vehicles also fell by 42.2 per cent to 67,372 units compared with 1,16,559 units. Two-wheelers too witnessed a slide in sales by 35.26 per cent to 11,95,445 units compared with 18,46,613 units in the period under review.

However, there was a silver lining in the registrations of passenger vehicles and tractors, the FADA data shows. Passenger vehicle retail sales in March 2021 witnessed year-on-year growth of 28.39 per cent to 2,79,745 units as compared with the year-ago month, which saw disruptions in the market due to COVID-19-led lockdown. Tractor sales also grew by 29.21 per cent to 69,082 units against 53,463 units during the months under review, the FADA has added.

The FADA has said that the vehicle registration data was collected from 1,277 out of the 1,482 regional transport offices (RTOs) in the country.
